One Message, Every Touchpoint · Series 1 · Part 6 of 7
No amount of visual consistency compensates for the moment a guest talks to a person. Staff and volunteer interactions are the touchpoint every other touchpoint is ultimately building toward — and it’s the one no logo, template, or gift box can guarantee on its own.
Consistent apparel still matters here, because it supports the people wearing it — the same colors, the same subtle branding, refreshed instead of accumulated across five mismatched years, so a guest can instantly spot “that’s someone I can ask.” But the deeper layer is how your team is actually trained to think about the people in front of them.
Here’s a worthwhile question for any pastor or care pastor: what has your team actually read together lately about how people experience being welcomed? In Unreasonable Hospitality, Will Guidara draws a sharp line between mechanical service and genuine hospitality, noting simply that “service is black and white; hospitality is color.” For a church welcome team, that’s the difference between handing someone a bulletin because that’s the job, and actually noticing them — making them feel seen and cared for as a person, not a task. Guidara also makes the point that good intentions don’t count for much if they don’t land; hospitality is measured by what the guest actually feels, not by what the team meant to do.
Isn’t that, in the simplest terms, just showing someone the love of Jesus through how they’re treated at your door?
That’s a culture worth being intentional about — choosing the books, the training, and the huddle conversations that shape how your team sees the people walking in, not just what they hand them.
(True Engagement can help you build the systems around your team — so the warmth they bring is matched by every touchpoint surrounding it.)
The takeaway: this is Tell, lived out. A team that treats people this way is telling your church’s story better than any graphic ever could — one church, one story, spoken through actions instead of ink.
