One Message, Every Touchpoint · Series 1 · Part 1 of 7
Picture a first-time guest’s Saturday night. She saw an Instagram post about a fall festival — great graphics, fun energy, looks like something worth checking out. She taps over to your events page to get the details… and it’s not there. Nothing scheduled for the next 45 to 90 days, actually. She digs a little further and finds a totally different flyer for the same event that came in her mailbox last week, with different colors and a slightly different date on it. Somewhere between the mailer, the Instagram post, and the yard sign she drove past on the way home, three different versions of the same event have been competing for her trust — and none of them agree.
Here’s the honest question every church should sit with: does she keep scrolling to the next church instead of ever pulling into your parking lot?
It’s rarely one bad decision that causes this. More often, it’s one overwhelmed communications volunteer or staff member trying to be helpful to everyone at once — saying yes to the youth pastor’s flyer, yes to the women’s ministry graphic, yes to the missions team’s last-minute yard sign — each one designed separately, in different colors, with a different version of the logo, none of them matching the events page on the website. It sounds petty until you realize the church five minutes down the road has none of these problems. Their brand colors are locked in everywhere. Their events are posted 90 days out. And they’ve quietly built an automated follow-up system that can start reaching a new family before their first visit and continue touching them, thoughtfully, in the weeks after.
Is that the real reason the church across town has new faces coming back for a second visit — and signing up for Growth Track or Discovery classes — while yours sees the same guest once and never again?
Every touchpoint we’re about to walk through falls into one of three simple moves: you Engage people where they already are, you Tell your story with clarity and consistency, and you Compel them toward a clear next step. Keep those three words in mind — they’re the thread running underneath everything in this series, because one church should be telling one story, at every single touchpoint.
This series is about closing that gap, one touchpoint at a time:
- Part 2 — Your digital footprint: is your website, social media, and advertising actually working together, and is your church even visible where people search today?
- Part 3 — The first four minutes: what a guest decides about you while still in the car, and again while walking through your doors.
- Part 4 — The follow-up journey: how thoughtful, personal touchpoints (not robotic automation) turn a first-time guest into a regular.
- Part 5 — The welcome gift: why a more thoughtful gift beats a logoed mug every time.
- Part 6 — Staff and volunteers: the touchpoint no design file can fake, and the books worth putting in your team’s hands.
- Part 7 — Bringing it all together, and why one partner who understands ministry can make it happen.
Every one of these is a moment where a guest decides to trust you a little more — or wonder a little more. Let’s make sure it’s the former, every time.
